FRANCIS OF ASSISI FRIARY
Limuru town is located on a mountainous landscape that borders the beginning of the Great Rift Valley. It is about thirty kilometers West of Nairobi and has an altitude of 2,272 meters above sea level.
The Friary of St. Francis of Assisi was built in 1992, when Friars got an invitation to share the Franciscan spirit with the people of the larger Archdiocese of Nairobi. The friars in Limuru do their apostolate in the parish, the Press and Children’s home.
Franciscan Kolbe Press
Franciscan Kolbe Press, commonly known as Kolbe Press, was established in 1986 in Ruiri, Meru to help with the evangelization through print media. Its first product was the magazine of Messenger of Mary Immaculate, which continues to be published by the Conventual Franciscans today. Because running the Press demanded daily contact with the customers, and all the materials and service were mainly available in Nairobi (the capital city), it was necessary to move all the equipment from Ruiri closer to the city. The friars thus decided that the Press be moved to Limuru.
St. Anthony Children’s Home and Women Centre
In addition to running the parish and the printing press, the friars have also helped in establishing St. Anthony Women Centre whose aim is to assist young ladies in need of special help, such as psychological growth accompanied with useful trades, e.g. tailoring, as well as children’s home which cares for destitute girls in need, mainly orphans, abused, or those from poor or hostile families. These facilities are run by the Daughters of the Sacred Heart Sisters in collaboration with the friars.
