Kathanga is geographically located in Mutuati Location, Igembe North sub-county which is part of Meru County. On the Catholic Diocese of Meru map, it falls within Igembe deanery that until 2021 was made up of 14 parishes, namely;

Kangeta Parish, Athi Parish, Amugenti Parish, Laare Parish, Athiru Ruujine Parish, Maua Parish, Mutuati Parish, Nthare Parish, Antubetwe Parish, Mukululu parish, Tuuru Parish, Nthambiro Parish, and Kiegoi Parish.

13. Kiegoi Parish
Having been part of Mutuati parish, Kathanga sub-parish was proposed for elevation to the level of a parish in mid-2020. The Bishop of Meru, His Lordship Salesius Mugambi, invited the Conventual Franciscan Friars in September 2020 to visit the above-mentioned sub-parish for its evaluation. By December 2020, the signing of the Act of Agreement between the Conventual Franciscan Friars and the Bishop of Meru Diocese was completed. Thereafter, the General definitory of the Conventual Franciscans in Rome approved the Kenyan friars to take over the proposed parish of Kathanga.
