SHORT HISTORY

Franciscan Kolbe Press began its operation as Diocese of Meru – Kolbe Press’ in 1987, in Ruiri, Diocese of Meru, some 250 km from Nairobi, as a fulfillment of a dream of the then Bishop of Meru, the late Rt. Rev. Silas S. Njiru, who invited Conventual Franciscan Friars from the Polish Province of Warsaw that “gave birth” to St. Maximilian M. Kolbe Province – Gdansk to, among other apostolates, establish and run a printing press for his diocese.

The first director was fr. John Łempicki with the help of bro. John Łuciów. In 1991 our mission was enriched by the coming of bro. Sławomir Perzyna and bro. Krzysztof Kozak, who became the director till 2003, when fr. Bogusław Czerniakowski was assigned to help in the running of the press. Along with the changes in Franciscan administration in Kenya, in 2004 bro. Robert Kozielski became the new director, he was replaced in 2006 by fr. Wiesław Wróblewski but returned again in 2010, supported by fr. Bogusław Czerniakowski. From the beginning of the year 2011 Fr. Edward Ouma Owino took over the running of the Press supported by Fr. Boguslaw Czerniakowski and Br. Ayub Mwenda. In 2016, the Custodial Chapter elected Fr. Stephen Gatimu who took over from Fr. Edward till mid 2018 when Fr. Raduk Hillary assisted by Fr. Paul Njoroge Kimani took over.

Due to distance from Ruiri in Meru where the press was situated to the capital (Nairobi), there were many difficulties with providing continuous supply of needed materials as well as technical support for the machines. These problems made the friars to move the press to Limuru town in 1992, a distance of 36 kilometers from Nairobi. The decision was made in order to make the supplies and technical support easily obtainable, which in turn made the contact with our customers better and many of the difficulties overcome.

That time the press printed quite simple jobs, mainly brochures, stationeries, invoice books etc.
It also started publishing a magazine ‘Messenger of Mary Immaculate’.
